Character Name: Matthias
Character Canon: Redwall
History: Here
AU History: Where Matthias originally hailed from is largely unknown to both himself and those around him, as he was found as a crying babe on the outskirts of Union by a passing patrol; the truth however being that he was abandoned by a small farming family who lived on the outskirts of Union that couldn't afford the extra mouth to feed, but as he has spent the entirety of his life within it's walls, he would call no other place home. At the age of 6, he managed to elude his caregivers and found himself in the Pokémon Habitat; more importantly, found his personal space being invaded by a very curious and excitable Buneary whom he took a wondrous shine to, finding the erratic Pokemon to be absolutely delightful as it lead him into a swift, albeit one-sided game of tag. It was during this short time that one of the elder caretakers, an wizened man by the name of Methuselah, caught sight of the two and found himself endeared to how quickly the child had managed to make a friend of the Pokémon.
He contacted the university and opted to take the young Matthias under his wing for more personalized training, as he seemed to have a natural knack and patience with Pokémon that he wished to encourage; from that day on, the Pokémon Habitat became his home and he embraced the life of a caregiver with great enthusiasm.
...Most of the time.
Gentle and understanding a child as he was, he had a hot-headed streak when it came to his sense of right and wrong, and whenever he bore witness to something that stepped over that line, he was quick to lash out with his fists, leading to quite a few escorts home from a member of the Swords and and even more black eyes than poor Methuselah could count. His moral compass and rash nature were further compounded by the tails of valiant Rangers and Swords told by the other caregivers, and no stories interested him greater than the one's of Martin the Warrior! Kind, noble, strong and courageous, a man with every trait that Matthias aspired himself to, and having grown up on those stories, the news of his death struck the young lad hard.
Methuselah had realized over the years that while Matthias had a great aptitude for caretaking, he carried the soul of a warrior inside of him and wasn't at all surprised to hear the young boy declare himself off to join the Swords as well out of respect to his fallen hero. He gave the young boy his blessings and as well, allowed Matthias to take the Buneary he had made friends with as a child with him, prompting Matthias to name him Basil, after Methuselah's favorite dish, Basil Tomato Soup.
His time training for the Swords would have been fairly short lived, if not for the dedication of a few instructors who saw a spark of something in the young lad; not any great martial prowess, but an aptitude for thinking on one's feet, working well with others, and utilizing one's environment to the best of their abilities. Instead of forcing lessons on him, they cultivated those talents and as he saw more and more progress in his growth as a Sword, the quiet, scrappy-natured boy grew into a relatively confident young man who most couldn't find so much as a single bad word to say about him, even if he still tends to keep mostly to himself and Basil than anyone else.
Canon Personality: Matthias, for all his intricacies and character development within the stories he is in, remains inherently simple at the core of his nature. He is a kindly mouse, seeking only to do the best he can by not only the people he cares about, but to anyone actively in need. He is shown in many instances to be willing to go out of his way to help those he sees as needing help in any capacity and is very slow to take grudges against others unless they've done something he views as unforgivable, such as slaying or betraying the trust of another. He is also a mouse of a very quiet nature, though he is far from antisocial, he often tends to take the backseat in a conversation, preferring to listen to others before saying his piece; while this can be seen as wise, it often leads to him being easily talked over, negating any meaningful effect his knowledge might have had.
This isn't to say however that Matthias is a pushover, very much the opposite. He displays very little impractical fear, even in the face of greater odds or foes; if anything, he uses any fear he might feel to sharpen his decision making in stressful situations. He very rarely backs down from a fight, even going so far as to openly taunt Clooney the Scourge during his siege of Redwall Abbey on multiple occasions after his various defeats and taking on his lieutenants with a coordinated effort between himself and his allies. He even stepped foot into the lair of a well known and feared animal killer, Asmodeus the Serpent in order to retrieve the Sword of Martin from his scaley grasp, an encounter that ended with the snake decapitated with that very sword.
Matthias draws his strength from those around him and from his sense of duty to them, these two things alone pushing him towards his destiny as the next defender of Redwall. His desire to not only protect those within the abbey, but to provide aid to all others being terrorized by Clooney and to live up to the legacy of Martin the Warrior drove Matthias to take up his sword and shield against many a larger foe; to scale the heights of the abbey into the Kingdom of the Sparrows; and to overcome all the obstacles put in his way. However, it is this sense of duty and honor that can also be his greatest weakness, as it is very easy to goad or distract him if the life of a friend or innocent bystander is put in danger. As well, while he is definitely very intelligent and quick to come up with strategies on the fly, if he is genuinely outwitted in something, it leaves him momentarily stunned and unsure of what to do.
AU Deviation: While not much will actually change with Matthias' character on a personal level, he will lack some of the battle hardened confidence he won by defeating Clooney the Scourge or enduring the trials he undertook to gain the Sword of Martin; he will still be moderately confident in his abilities, but not nearly as much as by the end of his book. As well, due to his lack of fellow abbey dwellers in Union, he won't be nearly as open and social with other people, as he feels more at home around Pokémon than he does actual people, due to his upbringing by Methuselah in the Pokémon Habitat. Overall, he will be much more quiet and a tad unsure of himself to start, though once he pulls into the thick of things, his skills as an effective coordinater will really shine.
Canon Abilities: Matthias himself has no real supernatural abilities and while the Sword of Martin is considered by the members of the abbey to be a holy relic, its blade is merely forged from meteorite metal; while strong, durable, and not prone to rust or wear, it was not supernatural.
If anything, the most notable abilities of Matthias had nothing to do with his martial prowess. Instead, he was most notable for his quick thinking and ability to cooperate and coordinate effectively with his allies in the heat of battle, leading to many a victory under the banner of Redwall. Later in life he did become well renowned for his skills with sword and staff, but he was always remembered for being an effective leader and easily bringing out the best in others, whether on the battlefield or in times of peace.
Enlightened Abilities: Matthias is, for all intents and purposes, your average, ordinary young man with no extraordinary powers or abilities to his name. However, he does seem to excel in handling and befriending Normal Type Pokémon, and his own Pokémon Basil seems to perform much more capably, albeit erratically due to this. As well, his time spent with Methuselah in the Pokemon Habitat has given him a much keener edge in training Pokémon to their fullest potential.
Normal | Far From Ordinary | Mastery of Training
Starter Pokémon: I will be forgoing the perk ability to choose three starter Pokemon in favor of having Matthias have one Pokémon, a Buneary named Basil (Lvl. 12), if that is acceptable. If not, I can just as easily choose other Pokemon, just let me know!

Third-Person:
[When a voice called out from behind them to stop, the last thing they expected to see when they turned around with a mousey haired young man in a Swords uniform, bearing an oaken stick and shield, one of which was pointed in their direction. Matthias had been on patrol when he'd heard sounds of a woman in distress coming from down an alley and tapping into his knowledge of the area, knew the alley was T shaped as a side road cut straight through it; he'd suggested his two compatriots flank either side while he went in to investigate and they'd agreed heartily.
The three men were easily much taller than Matthias, albeit more gangly and scruffy looking; they didn't at all look impressed by his declaration as two of them menaced their way towards him while one hung back to make sure the girl didn't go anywhere. The young man took a firmer, two handed grip on his staff and stared the approaching thugs down, the action giving them a moments pause as they stared between one another; Matthias emphasized this by giving his staff a twirl, knocking the wood loudly against brick, sending a violent echo down the darkened corridor before shifting forward an inch with his weapon back at the ready.
The action took one of the men by surprise, causing him to step back while the larger of the two stayed in front, blinking only once before he charged forward in startled fury.]
Now!
[Matthias cried, his signal having reached the ears of his comrades before his verbal command, the former readying them and the latter causing them to spring into action. A shield came whizzing down the right side of the intersection, easily smashing into the third ruffian's head and buffeting him to the ground unconscious; a moment later, a bolas came whizzing down the main alley, catching the second man around the ankles, causing him to sprawl to the floor with a sickening crack as his nose bent to the side, the pain knocking him out almost instantly. This left only Matthias and his attacker who was only an inch away from him with a broken bottle cocked back and ready to be thrust into his throat, but he looked particular unphased as the weapon drew closer.
He let out a small breath and turned hard on his heel to the right, smacking his staff into the man's wrist as he forced it into the nearby wall, the force of which smashed the glass and caused his attack to punch the wall hard, fracturing three of his four knuckles on contact. Matthias used the momentum of his turn to bring the staff hard into the back of his head, knocking it downwards with a violent crack of wood on bone as he stomped hard on the ruffian's shoe, holding it in place; through his vision blurred by involuntary tears and shock, he only had a second to see the staff come back and smash into his unprotected, sending him flying backwards off of his feet...save for the one Matthias held down with his own.
There was a sharp crack. A cry of animalistic pain. And then silence.
There would be no misdeeds in this alley tonight, Matthias had seen to that through the efforts of his allies and himself. As the two other member of his patrol and the young woman moved to congratulate and thank him, he wondered...if Martin the Warrior were here, would he have be proud as well?]
-What would you say the role of Pokémon is in your life?
Honestly speaking? Quite a bit, actually. I find them much more agreeable than most people...if Methuselah hadn't given me a chance to get to really know the Pokémon in the Habitat...I might not be half the person I am today.
-What do you feel your role in Union is?
To help others and Pokémon who can't help themselves. To give a voice and justice to those who have none. Everyone deserves to stand on equal footing, people and Pokémon alike.
-What do you seek for humanity’s future?
Peace? Or at least harmony...even greater than what we have now. For everyone to be able to travel the world and see it's wonders without fear would be amazing!
-To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?
Anything! I couldn't possibly leave an ally stranded in the wilderness if I was of able body and mind!!
-What would you say the most important occupation is within Union?
I...don't really think there's a clear answer to that question? Everyone views their occupations in a different light, but they're all very significent to our wellbeing here in Union! Without one, it might destabilize another which would lead to an awful collapse...I think we've seen enough of that.
-What does the story of the Savior mean to you?
It's an inspiration. Not just to me, but to many in the city, a ray of hope in otherwise bleak times. Maybe it's nothing more than myth, but if it gives people the strength to forge on to the next day, then it's a story worth retelling.
-What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?
Kindness. Empathy. The ability to stand up for what one truly believes in and to give their all for those ideals...to be brave and courageous in the face of any adversity and to never back down despite the odds. Just as Martin the Warrior did!
-What do you think your Pokémon respect most about you?
I have no idea honestly...if I had to take a guess, it might be that I indulge Basil's more spastic tendancies! He does have a habit of being overly energetic, but I think he enjoys the games we've made of his training more than anything else! I might also slip him some extra food after suppers, but don't tell anyone!
-In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.
Muder and Betrayal. Nothing else even comes close...to do either is to take the two most precious things from someone; their life and their trust. That kind of pain is something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy and I for the life of me I can't even begin to imagine how someone could conceive of doing either.

Additional History:
After the events of the raid on Sanctuary, Matthias was left in more than just a little bit of a daze due to what he'd witnessed there; simply moving about his day to day activities in silent contemplation. This silent contemplation grew into a burning flame in his core he simply couldn't get rid of; a burning which turned into weeks worth of restless nights, pains, and aches that exceeded what he was used to getting from his sword training with Martin.
Eventually, he could no longer ignore the voice in the back of his head urging him to seek solitude to better understand his situation, so without telling a soul, he departed one evening for the wilderness surrounding Union. There he's been diligently training with Basil to further perfect his skills in both fighting and in understanding the transformation he's gone through...but there was only so much he could gain from training alone; now that his pains were gone and his mind was much more clear...it was time for him to return home.
