Justification: When Matthias began his time in game, he was sure of what he wanted to do, but unsure of his place in the grand scheme of things; an idea without a direction so to say. It was only after meeting his childhood hero Martin that he started to come into his own, developing a deeper sense of right and wrong beyond the sense of the idealism and fantasies he had formed and held on to growing up. Getting to know the man behind the myth helped to temper Matthias and ground him in the here and now, rather than letting his head stay up in the clouds where he could safely react to situations as they came instead of acting on and of his own volition.
His will was further cemented when he came face to face with Prisca and her companions in the Old City. His normal reaction to a situation such as that would have normally been to protect the peace and his teammates at all costs, but having heard of her situation prior and seeing her in such a state, Matthias abandoned his old philosophies in favor of following his own heart, and as such he refused to raise a hand against her even after being kicked across the floor by her Lucario.
However, despite all this, he was still far too withdrawn from others and unwilling to come out of his shell which crippled his ability to rely on others when it was necessary; he was forced to take his first step away from his comfortable isolation when his father figure Methuselah passed away. His death forced Matthias to recognize that life was a fleeting gift, and to spend it isolating oneself was a waste. It was that realization that prompted Matthias to accept Martin's offer to share a home together, and got him to spread his wings a little. Then when the time came for the raid on Sanctuary, Matthias was put to the test in his ability to work with others; it wasn't a horribly successful endeavor, but he found that whatever he could have done by himself in that situation was only made easier and more effective by working with the group as a whole. However, the revelation of what was going on behind the scenes there left him shaken and took him right into a war between his budding confidence and his insecurities.
Between the growing conflict within himself and his growing strength due to the rigorous training exercises that Martin was running him through, a switch in him seemed to flick on and despite not having a clue of what was going on, he knew for sure that he was changing in some way. But in order to actualize the change, Matthias needed to clear his mind away from Union and so departed to train and to regain the confidence he'd lost in Sanctuary, not only to prove that he could survive under his own power, but that he could grow strong enough to truly protect those who could not protect themselves.
Enlightened Abilities: I would like for Matthias to gain the fighting type to represent his growth as an individual, going from someone who was meek and unsure of himself to someone strong and self assured. This also mirrors his growth in Redwall, where Matthias goes from being a young mouse of a modest nature to becoming the new hero of Redwall and the inheritor of the will of Martin the Warrior.
As such, the initial thing that would come from his awakening would be something almost akin to a Warrior's Sense, an ability to find the ebb and flow within combat and to roll with it, allowing him to almost read a fight; of course to begin with this sense would be rather muted, almost like having a feeling of deja vu and only after being in or observing a fight for an extended period of time. After leveling up, he'll be able to read those ebbs and flows with more consistency, allowing him to actively weave them into his combat rather than simply having feelings that he reacts to as they sporadically come. Evolving twice would leave this sense at its peak, an almost flawless perception of the tides of battle that gives Matthias an almost intimate understanding of just what is happening within a person's movements to a point border lining precognition; however since this is not a psychic feat, it can be confused and misdirected by a clever opponent.
In a more general sense, Matthias would grow about a full foot and a half while his shoulders and chest broadened to accommodate the growth in muscle mass he's undergone in his transformation, leaving him looking much more accustomed to combat than he's ever looked. His speed, strength, and endurance would extend beyond that of a normal human, if only by a small margin to begin with; while he could easily lift carts filled with food or move boulders slightly smaller than himself, he cannot do things such as shatter stone with his bare hands, at least not until he has evolved at least once.
With training, he could mimic to some degree moves such as Dizzy Punch or High Jump Kick, though obviously lacking in the same force that a pokemon like Basil could put behind it. After an evolution, he would be able to perform things such as Brick Break and Strength with relative ease and a second evolution would grant him strength enough to perform Rock Smash and Seismic Toss. As he evolves, the most noticeable trait about him will be the fact that his hair is going to grow wildly due to his increased flow of adrenaline. As of current, it is now hanging down to about the bottom of his neck, and by the time he reaches his second evolution, it will have reached the small of his back and have taken on an appearance not dissimilar to a lion's mane.
